April 30 (Reuters) - Canadian miner Goldcorp Inc said environmental permit approval for its El Morro copper-gold project was suspended by the Supreme Court of Chile.
Sociedad Contractual Minera El Morro, which is 70 percent owned by Goldcorp and rest by New Gold Inc, immediately suspended all field work at the project, Goldcorp said in a statement.
Protests by indigenous communities in Chile have threatened companies such as Goldcorp.
Canada's No. 2 gold miner's environmental permit for the $3.9 billion copper project was struck down in February at the request of an indigenous agricultural community and the company had approached the Supreme Court.
The approval for the permit was issued on March 14, 2011.
The suspension ruling said the permit would remain suspended until certain deficiencies -- specifically identified by a court of appeal -- are corrected by the Chilean environmental permitting authority.
