TORONTO, June 11 (Reuters) - Encana Corp, Canada's biggest natural gas producer, on Tuesday named former BP Plc executive Doug Suttles as its new president and chief executive.
Suttles, a nearly three-decade veteran of the oil and gas sector, is taking the reins from interim CEO Clayton Woitas, who took over after Randy Eresman retired unexpectedly in early January. Suttles was also named a director on Encana's board.
Eresman, who led Calgary, Alberta-based Encana for seven years, faced criticism from investors over the poor stock performance and a U.S. Department of Justice probe into whether the company illegally colluded with Chesapeake Energy Corp to lower the price of exploration lands.
The company said Suttles, a mechanical engineer by training, most recently served as chief operating officer of BP Exploration and Production.
Encana's shares, which have fallen more than 40 percent over the last two years, were down 4 Canadian cents at C$18.87 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
