UPDATE 1-US to allow restart of Enbridge's Line 14

WASHINGTON Aug 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. government said on Monday it would allow the restart of Enbridge Inc's Line 14, while vowing to keep a close eye on the company's progess in implementing new safety measures.

A rupture on the line late last month spilled more than 1,000 barrels of crude in a Wisconsin field.

Some of the conditions of the restart include aerial and foot patrols of key areas of the pipeline and a lower operating pressure, the Transportation Department's pipeline regulator said.

"Communities across the country deserve to know that the pipelines running underneath their homes, streets and businesses are safe," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "That is why we are requiring Enbridge to commit to such a thorough safety plan."

LaHood said he would be holding weekly meetings with his agency to make sure Enbridge was complying with the requirements of the restart.

The decision to allow the operations to resume on the 318,000 barrel per day pipeline follows the agency's unusual order last week calling on Enbridge to submit a plan to ensure the structural integrity of its entire 1,900 mile Lakehead Pipeline System and not just Line 14.
